Decisive Employment Legal Action When It Matters Most

Employment disputes can be overwhelming—especially when your livelihood, reputation, or future is at stake. Okula Law works with employees who want straightforward advice, realistic expectations, a clear understanding of their options, and experienced advocacy.

Having handled hundreds of employment claims from the employer’s side, Yoko can help employees see the full picture—how claims are assessed, valued, litigated and resolved in practice, not just in theory.

Perspective That Works in Your Favor

For decades, Yoko advised corporate leadership on employment risk, litigation strategy, and settlement decisions. That experience now informs how Yoko counsels employees as her clients —by helping them understand what employers look at, what drives decision‑making, and how different approaches can affect outcomes.  This perspective allows for informed strategy that works in your favor.

How We Help Employees

Okula Law provides legal representation to employees in employment matters including:

  • Wrongful termination and retaliation/whistleblower

  • Harassment and discrimination

  • Wage and hour disputes

  • Severance and separation negotiations

  • Pre‑litigation counseling and dispute resolution

We take cases where we believe our experience and judgment can make a meaningful difference and where we can provide honest and candid advice from the outset.

For Employers

Experienced Employment Counsel Informed by Real‑World Risk

Employment issues are rarely abstract legal problems. They affect operations, morale, leadership credibility, and the bottom line. Okula Law works with employers who want clear, strategic guidance—not noise—when employment risks arise.

We understand how employment decisions are made under real business pressure and how disputes are evaluated when the stakes are high.

Experience That Translates Into Practical Advice

For many years, Yoko led employment litigation and risk strategy for California and the Western United States, overseeing matters ranging from single‑plaintiff lawsuits to complex class and representative actions. Yoko worked closely with HR professionals, executives, and outside counsel to assess exposure, set strategy, manage litigation budgets, and resolve disputes efficiently.

That perspective allows Okula Law to advise employers with clarity and realism—focused on outcomes, not theatrics.

How We Can Assist Employers

Okula Law represents employers in a range of employment matters, including:

  • Single‑plaintiff employment disputes in state/federal courts and state/federal government agency matters before the California Civil Department (CRD), California Labor Commissioner and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)

  • Employment law compliance advice

  • Workplace investigations and executive/supervisor misconduct matter

  • Early dispute resolution, risk assessment and litigation avoidance strategy

  • Conflict counsel role defending individuals (executives, managers and other employees) sued for employment-related claims when counsel for the defendant employer cannot offer legal representation due to an actual or potential conflict of interest

We approach each matter with an understanding of business priorities, reputational concerns, and the importance of sound defensible decisions at every stage as a trusted advisor.  We can also tailor fee arrangements and services to client needs.

What To Expect from Okula Law

A Real Conversation - At No Cost

Reaching out to a lawyer can feel intimidating and stressful. Okula Law’s goal is to make the first conversation straightforward and useful. You will speak directly with an attorney who will listen carefully and focus on understanding what’s actually happening in an initial consultation meeting free of charge.

You don’t need to have everything figured out in the call but here’s information to help with our conversation:

  • A brief timeline (When did the issue start? Any upcoming deadlines, meetings, decisions?)

  • Who is involved?  (Employer, employee, organization, key players involved)

  • Your role (Employee, manager, HR, executive, business owner)

  • Key documents (An offer letter, employment agreement, or severance proposal, relevant emails, texts, written warnings, termination/layoff notice, etc.)

  • What’s your primary concern? Need for legal services?

If you’re unsure, missing information, or feeling overwhelmed, that’s normal. Many people call before they know what questions to ask. We can sort through things together.

If we believe we can help, we will explain how and what the next steps would look like. If your situation may be better handled another way—or by someone else—we will inform you of that as well.

Respect for Your Time and Situation

Employment issues are often personal, sensitive, and time‑sensitive. Okula Law approaches every conversation with discretion and respect, whether you are an employer or an employee.

Clear advice starts with a clear conversation.

Yoko Yagi Okula, Esq.

Partner and Founder

Yoko is the founding partner of Okula Law.  She practices primarily in labor and employment law with 25+ years of specialized practice.  With varied experiences advising employers from the inside and representing individuals facing workplace disputes, Yoko brings clarity, balance and strategic judgment to every matter she handles for her clients.

Legal Experience

Yoko’s focus in her practice has been shaped by her deep experience and familiarity handling hundreds of lawsuits in her role as Assistant General Counsel at the Home Depot for almost 20 years.  She led employment litigation in 13 Western states primarily in California (including class/PAGA, single plaintiff and government agency actions).  In her role, Yoko also served as a trusted advisor on a wide variety of employment issues applying real world judgment in a fast-paced retail environment when decisions impacted operations, budgets, reputations, and people.  Yoko started her career at Payne & Fears LLP, an employment litigation law firm where she was trusted with vast responsibilities early on and gained hands-on litigation and counseling experience representing various employers from Fortune 100 companies to emerging regional and local businesses.

Yoko understands how companies work, approach litigation and legal compliance.  Her understanding of how each side evaluates litigation is key to Yoko’s approach in tailoring her strategy to each of her clients to meet their objectives, from seeking early resolution to vigorously litigating their interests, and maneuvering every strategy in between.  Her practice focuses on what she finds most rewarding - listening to her clients and using her expertise to attain the best result for them.

Yoko served as a member of the Board of Directors of the California Employment Law Council, including its President.  She has provided volunteer pro bono services through StreetLaw, Public Counsel, and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.  She also served as a connector between various local non-profit organizations and The Home Depot Foundation and organized several community service projects (recognized by Asian Americans Advancing Justice-OC with its Corporate Impact Award and by the Orange County Bar Association).

Academic Background

Yoko attended Loyola Law School, J.D. 2000.  She graduated top of her class with several honors, and served on the Loyola Law Review and Scott Moot Court Competition.  She also served as a legal extern to Hon. Stephen Reinhardt, United States Circuit Judge for the NInth Circuit Court of Appeal.  Yoko graduated from University of California, Irvine with a double major in Political Science and Social Ecology (Criminology, Law, Society) and a minor in Japanese in 1996.

Personal

Having grown up between cultures, Yoko learned how to listen carefully, take in different perspectives, and use her voice for advocacy and resolution all her life. She is fluent in Japanese, culturally sensitive, and comfortable working with clients for whom English may not be their first language.
